Blessed Antonio Varona Ortega, O.P., Martyr, studied at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., from 1922-1924. He continued his studies at The Catholic University of America from 1924-1926, graduating from CUA with an M.A. in 1926 with a thesis entitled, “The Educational Work of the Dominicans in the Philippine Islands.” (Source: Dominicana 11, March 1926, 152.) He was ordained to the priesthood in New Orleans and later served in the Philippines as a professor at Letran and moderator of the NCAA Philippines, before returning to Spain in 1933. He was martyred during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Feast day November 6th.
