Charles Jorn was the son of Charles and Anna Kelly Jorn. He attended public grammar schools and Evander Childs High School in New York City. After attending Providence College, Providence, RI (1932), Charles entered the Dominican novitiate of St. Joseph Province receiving the habit on August 15, 1933, at St. Rose Priory near Springfield, KY, taking the religious name, Sebastian.
After his Simple Profession, he studied philosophy and one year of theology at the Dominican House of Studies, River Forest, IL. He continued his theological studies at the Dominican House of Studies, Washington, DC. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Dominic’s Church by Archbishop Michael J. Curley of Baltimore.
Fr. Charles was a student at the Catholic University of America from 1941 to 1943. His first priestly assignment was to Providence College, 1943-1949, where he was a professor of mathematics. He was chaplain for 500 boys at St. Agnes Home from 1949 to the time of his death at the motherhouse of the Sparkill Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, NY. In his last years he was chaplain of their infirmary.
Charlie was a patient in the Sisters’ Infirmary as a retired chaplain, lovingly cared for by the devoted Dominican Sisters. Though frail and ill, he kept his great sense of humor and patiently accepted his illness. He was visited often by the sisters he served so well, some of whom were at his bedside when he died.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in the motherhouse chapel. The Provincial, Very Rev. Dominic Izzo, O.P., presided and Rev. Lawrence Keitz O.P., was the homilist. Fr. Jorn was laid to rest in the motherhouse cemetery at Sparkill, NY.
