Robert Louis Every, professed and ordained for the province of St Joseph, transfiliated to the new province of St. Martin de Porres in 1979. His years in our province were quite varied: Beirut, Lebanon, 1956-58; provincial secretary, 1959; vocation director for the province, 1960; prior of St. Vincent Ferrer Priory, New York city, 1961-63; provincial, 1963-67; prior of the Dominican House of Studies, 1967-70; St. Martin de Porres, Columbia, SC as hospital chaplain and Vicar for Religious of the Columbia-Aiken Deaneries, 1971-74; Assistant to the Master of the Order for the U.S. provinces, 1974-80; vicar of the community of Santa Sabina, 1975-80.
As a member of St. Martin de Porres province he served as chaplain for Providence Hospital, Columbia, SC and superior of the Dominican community in Columbia. In 1988 he moved to New Orleans as vicar provincial with Paul J. Philibert, provincial. In 1992 he worked with AIDS patients at Project Lazarus in New Orleans. As his health declined, he was on limited service while continuing to live at St. Anthony’s priory until his final illness.
His funeral Mass was offered at St. Anthony of Padua church, New Orleans. Bishop Bertrand Boland, O.P., a classmate, celebrated the Mass along with concelebrants Fr. Alberto Rodríguez, O.P., provincial of St. Martin de Porres province, and Fr. Terence Quinn, O.P., a classmate, who preached the homily. He was buried in the Dominican plot at Rosaryville cemetery, Rosaryville, LA.
