In Memoriam: Roger John Stroh

Roger J. Stroh, age 84 of Springfield, Virginia passed away on November 28, 2025. He was born on October 27, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Fabian J. and Ursula (McDonald) Stroh.

Roger attended Our Lady of the Angels grade school and St. Ignatius High School. He graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a degree in Economics. He began his career as a disc jockey at WEOL in Cleveland and later served as a Naval Officer on the USS Caloosahatchee followed by duty in Washington DC. There he oversaw the Navy’s “Hello Mom” program which allowed troops stationed overseas to speak to family in the United States via ham radio connection including a segment promoting the program on The Today Show. While stationed in Washington he met Anne Kavanagh, and they were married in 1968. They resided in Potomac, Maryland for 50 years and later moved to Springfield, VA.

Roger spent much of his post Naval career at the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association and retired from there as President.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Anne (Kavanagh) Stroh, sons Mike (Debbie) Stroh of Cincinnati, Ohio and Bob (Jenny) Stroh of Annandale, Virginia and his six grandsons Matthew, Daniel, Nicholas, Luke, Brendan and Owen Stroh.

Roger loved family, friends, faith, golf and Xavier basketball. He was an ardent believer in Jesuit education and was proud that his sons and three grandsons attended Gonzaga College High School, three grandsons attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati along with five family members representing second and third generations at Xavier University.

The family would like to acknowledge the love and support from Roger’s caregivers. Dora, Monica, Evelyn, Theresa and Vida have been a godsend and are angels among us.

A visitation will be held on December 6, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church 7600 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22152.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 AM. Internment immediately following Mass at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Dominican Friars Foundation.
