St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, Lay Dominican
St. Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925) was a lay Dominican whose short life bore lasting fruit in prayer, charity, and joy. Born in Turin, Italy, on April 6, 1901, he lived as a university student deeply rooted in the life of the Church, devoted to the poor, and committed to following Christ in the ordinary circumstances of the world. He was canonized on September 7, 2025.
A Life Hidden with Christ
While studying engineering at the University of Turin, Pier Giorgio was known for his friendships, his love of the outdoors, and his lively spirit. Beneath this outward joy was a disciplined interior life. He attended daily Mass when possible, spent time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and drew strength from Scripture and study.
Living in Italy during a time of political unrest and the rise of fascism, Pier Giorgio quietly opposed injustice through works of mercy. He regularly visited the poor, cared for the sick, and offered practical help to those who had been forgotten. Much of this was done in secret. Only at his funeral did many realize how many lives he had touched.
A Lay Dominican
On May 28, 1922, Pier Giorgio was received into the Dominican Order as a layman. The Dominican way—prayer, study, and the preaching of the Gospel—shaped his life in the world. His love for the Eucharist, his devotion to the Blessed Mother, and his concern for truth and justice all flowed from this vocation.
He died suddenly of polio on July 4, 1925, at the age of twenty-four. Pope St. John Paul II beatified him on May 20, 1990, calling him the “Man of the Beatitudes.” His canonization affirms what his life already showed: holiness is possible in youth, in friendship, in study, and in service to the poor.
“Verso l’alto”
Pier Giorgio often signed his letters with the words Verso l’alto—“to the heights.” He loved the mountains, but the phrase also named his deeper desire: to live for Christ without compromise. As a lay Dominican, he remains a powerful witness that sanctity is not a withdrawal from the world, but a faithful presence within it.
Watch: In the Footsteps of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati
This EWTN documentary follows a pilgrimage through Italy in the footsteps of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati. Led by Fr. Vincent Bernard, O.P., the journey visits the places where Frassati prayed, studied, served the poor, and grew in holiness—from Turin and Pollone to the Sanctuary of Oropa and Rome. Along the way, pilgrims reflect on how his life continues to call young people to joy, discipline, and a deeper love for God.
