Dominican Intellectual Centers

All Dominican Friars are committed to assiduous study and contemplation of sacred truth. The Province of St. Joseph founded and continues to serve three intellectual centers: the Dominican House of Studies, Providence College, and the Dominican Healthcare Ministry.

Dominican House of Studies

The Pontifical Faculty at Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, provides intellectual formation for the Dominican Friars of our province and other students according to the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Dominican House of Studies hosts the annual conference for the Academy of Catholic Theology and is home to the Thomistic Institute. The Thomistic Institute provides conferences and intellectual retreats for university students and now brings the thought of Thomas Aquinas to over 100 college campuses in the United States and abroad through its network of campus chapters. The Aquinas 101 video series and other digital content from the Thomistic Institute now reach millions of people annually throughout the United States and worldwide.

Providence College

The Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph established Providence College in Rhode Island in 1917. Providence College has grown into a co-educational institution with a student body of over 4,000 undergraduates from throughout the country. With a large number of friars teaching in classrooms, serving as chaplains to the student body, and working in administration, the college remains committed to a liberal arts education within the framework of the Catholic and Western tradition.

Dominican Healthcare Ministry

The Dominican Healthcare Ministry serves as a center for Catholic bioethics, integrating the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas with current scientific insights, and provides ethical guidance and pastoral care for patients, doctors, nurses, and hospitals.

Based in New York City, the friars of the Dominican Healthcare Ministry also serve as chaplains for Memorial Sloan Kettering, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and New York Presbyterian Hospital.
